Everyone in Pune Has a Lonavala Plan. Almost Nobody Has a Full Car.

Lonavala is close enough to Pune - under a hundred kilometres via the expressway - that it's less a 'trip' in the planning sense and more a thing people just decide to do on a Saturday morning. Mahabaleshwar is a longer haul, further into a proper weekend, but it gets the same treatment: someone in the group WhatsApp says 'let's go' on Thursday and by Saturday there's a car heading out of the city.

What's a little strange, given how often this happens, is how rarely that car is actually full. A lot of Lonavala weekends happen as two people in a car meant for four or five, or one person booking a cab alone because their usual travel group couldn't make it this time. The destination is popular enough that on any given weekend there's a good chance several people from the same office, same friend circle, or same general part of the city are making close to the same trip - they just don't know it, because there's never been an easy way to find out.

The actual cost difference is not small

Fuel and tolls to Lonavala and back add up regardless of how many people are in the car - splitting that four ways instead of paying it alone (or with one other person) is the difference between a trip that costs real money and one that barely registers. Mahabaleshwar, being further, makes the math even more obvious: a full car splits a genuinely large one-way distance into a per-person cost that's easy to justify for a weekend, versus a solo or two-person trip where the fuel bill alone gives people a reason to just stay home instead.

Why this is a different problem from a daily commute

Nobody is trying to build a recurring Monday-Friday habit out of a Lonavala trip. It's a one-off, and the one-off nature is exactly what makes it harder to organize informally - you can't rely on 'the same people every day' the way an office commute does. What actually works is posting the specific weekend and route ahead of time, the way people already do in friend-group chats, except visible to more than just your own circle, so a half-full car heading to Lonavala on a Saturday has an actual chance of finding the other two seats instead of driving up with them empty.
